Jay Sanders, Zack Page & Alan Hall

Every Tuesday, savor experimental musica universalis focused primarily on the group's original writing and sonic explorations. These aural wayfarers fear no boundary.

Known for many years for his work with Acoustic Syndicate, the Snake Oil Medicine Show, The E.Normus Trio, Donna the Buffalo, AVAS, and many others, Jay Sanders has since returned to his musical roots as a composer and guitarist. His debut solo record, Évanescent, (much of which was honed while playing live at Little Jumbo) will be released in the late spring of 2023.

Alan Hall has been a professional drummer for over 45 years. He’s performed and/or recorded with international jazz artists Lee Konitz, Paul McCandless, Art Lande, Ed Simon, Geoffrey Keezer, Kenny Washington, Rebecca Parris, and Joyce Cooling as well as Cirque Du Soliel, Teatro Zinzanni, Wicked S.F. He has taught at many prestigious jazz institutions including the Berklee College of Music and California Jazz Conservatory. A prodigious composer, Alan also leads the Asheville Jazz Collective, a staple of Little Jumbo's Monday jazz series.

Let's be honest, if you enjoy live music in Asheville, NC, and you don't know the singularity known as Zack Page, you've clearly been living under a rock. Zack is arguably Asheville's most versatile upright and electric bassist; the go-to guy for just about everyone which keeps him out of the house and averaging 275 gigs a year. Zack has performed extensively in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, including studio work in Asheville, Nashville and New York City.

Brian Felix Organ Quartet LIVE RECORDING

In the spirit of the many legendary Live at the Village Vanguard recordings, The Brian Felix Organ Quartet is making a LIVE RECORD at Little Jumbo and YOU are invited to participate! Join us over two nights as our local heroes make their magic. Don’t be shy, we want your cheers, applause, laughter, and presence to be forever captured on vinyl!

One small detail: Presence in the bar is viewed as an agreement to be recorded. If you’re anywhere near an open microphone (especially the drums) don’t say anything you wouldn’t want your best friend or worst enemy to use against you in the court of public opinion!

Brian Felix is widely recognized as an accomplished and versatile jazz keyboardist. He was co-leader of OM Trio, an acclaimed San Francisco-based jazz-rock group that toured internationally between 1999-2004. Brian is active today as a performer and recording artist with his Brian Felix Organ Quartet and other prominent groups in Western North Carolina.

Felix has shared the stage with well-known musicians such as Joshua Redman, Charlie Hunter, Umphrey’s McGee, Sara Caswell, Billy Hart, Joe Russo, Kelly Sill, Dave Fiuczynski, and many others. Felix is a Professor of Music at UNC Asheville, where he teaches classes on jazz theory and improvisation, music business, jazz ensembles, keyboard skills, the Beatles, and the Grateful Dead.

The Brian Felix Organ Quartet plays Felix’s original book of jazz, funk, Latin, and blues-influenced tunes. The group takes cues from the classic organ combos of Jimmy Smith and Larry Young, as well as the modern groups of Larry Goldings, Sam Yahel, Joey DeFrancesco, and Medeski, Martin & Wood.

Max Johnson Trio

Fresh off the release of their 2022 album “Orbit of Sound” and their tour across Europe, virtuoso double bassist and composer Max Johnson presents his trio with Anna Webber (saxophone, flute), and Michael Sarin (drumset). Between the three of them, they have worked with artists such as Anthony Braxton, Mary Halvorson, John Zorn, Dave Douglass, Jen Shyu, William Parker, and this project highlights the individual sounds and experiences of these three unique voices, traversing tightly knit grooving composed music to patient sprawling improvised textures, blending their unique sounds to create something truly special.

"Combining Johnson’s compositions with well balanced improvising, the band explores broadly while maintaining a loose sense of groove... Then there are the experimental stretches — arid expanses that revel in silence and concentration before building back into Johnson’s compositional structure." - Craig Matsumoto, Memory Select
